Renowned cyclist Marianne Vos, a three-time world champion, has decided to skip the upcoming Road World Championships in Rwanda to support her father, who recently had surgery. According to Netherlands coach Laurens ten Dam, Vos's decision stemmed from the intense and hectic days following her father's hospitalization.
Vos, who has participated in the World Championships 16 times, securing victories in 2006, 2012, and 2013, will be replaced by Femke de Vries for the women's race in Kigali. Despite the substitution, Vos's presence on the team is irreplaceable due to her formidable track record.
Femke de Vries, who recently finished second in the Tour de l'Ardeche, will step in for Vos. However, coach Ten Dam emphasized that De Vries should not feel pressured to replicate Vos's success, highlighting her own strengths as a strong new contender for the Netherlands.
