Diplomatic Kick: Trump's Envoy Proposes Italy Substitute Iran in World Cup
A top envoy to U.S. President Donald Trump proposed replacing Iran with Italy in the World Cup to mend ties with Italy's Prime Minister. This suggestion aims to address political tensions and align with FIFA's discretion. Italy's continued exclusion from recent World Cups remains a sensitive topic.
An influential envoy to former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in the upcoming World Cup, according to a report by the Financial Times. This proposal, ostensibly to mend diplomatic relations with Italy, follows Trump's criticism of Pope Leo XIV's stance regarding the Iran war.
Paolo Zampolli, the U.S. special envoy, suggested that the Azzurri's pedigree merits their inclusion, given their four World Cup titles. Iran's qualification for the tournament is overshadowed by its request to switch venues due to geopolitical tensions, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino standing firm on the original schedule.
The possibility of replacing Iran rests with FIFA, according to Article Six of its regulations, though there is significant lobbying from the Asian Football Confederation for another Asian team, like the UAE, to be considered. As the tournament kickoff approaches, the diplomatic shuffle and sporting dreams hang in a delicate balance.
