BWF's Bold Move: New Scoring System Set to Revolutionize Badminton

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has officially approved the 3x15 scoring system, a groundbreaking change that will take effect on January 4, 2027. This decision was reached at the Annual General Meeting in Horsen, Denmark, with a two-thirds majority vote in favor.

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul hailed this as a crucial step towards modernizing badminton, maintaining the sport's tradition while preparing it for future generations. Key figures in Indian badminton, including Olympic medalists PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, voiced their concerns, arguing for the retention of the current 21-point system.

Despite apprehensions, the BWF is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining the essence of badminton. The organization promises further consultations with stakeholders to optimize the sport's global appeal and the athletes' long-term careers.
