Referee Scandal Rocks Italian Football Amidst Investigation

Gianluca Rocchi, the man responsible for assigning Serie A and B referees, has voluntarily suspended himself amidst an investigation into sports fraud being conducted by Milan's Public Prosecutor's Office. Rocchi's decision comes as VAR supervisor Andrea Gervasoni takes similar steps due to inquiries into events from last season.

In a statement released to Italy's referees' association (AIA), Rocchi emphasized that his decision, although challenging, was made to facilitate the legal proceedings. He remains confident of emerging unscathed from the allegations of interfering with VAR protocols and selecting referees favoring Inter Milan.

Inter President Giuseppe Marotta expressed surprise at the allegations, reaffirming the club's integrity, and distancing them from favoritism claims. The unfolding investigation has triggered concerns reminiscent of the Calciopoli scandal, potentially signifying another watershed crisis in Italian football.
