Adidas Soars as Sawe Breaks Sub-Two-Hour Marathon Barrier
Adidas shares rose as Kenya's Sabastian Sawe made history by running a sub-two-hour marathon at the London Marathon wearing Adidas' Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 trainers. His achievement came as a win for Adidas against its competitor Nike and highlighted the significance of innovative running technology.
Adidas, the German sportswear giant, saw its shares rise on Monday following an unprecedented athletic achievement by Kenya's Sabastian Sawe. Sawe became the first runner to complete a marathon in under two hours during an official race, marking his triumph at the London Marathon with a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds. He achieved this wearing Adidas' cutting-edge Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 trainers.
Sawe's historic achievement is a significant boost for Adidas in its ongoing rivalry with Nike. After years of rigorous laboratory experiments and near-successes in developing a 'supershoe,' Adidas has finally struck gold. This development comes after Nike's own sub-two-hour marathon attempt at Monza in 2017 fell short. Although Eliud Kipchoge ran under two hours in a non-official event, official records remained elusive until now.
The new Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 trainers, which played a role in breaking this barrier, feature innovative foam, carbon-plated soles, and lightweight components, enhancing running efficiency by 1.6%. Despite such advancements, Adidas shares face challenges, having decreased by 18% since the year's start due to tariff concerns and geopolitical tensions. The trainers go on sale Thursday, priced at $500, targeting elite athletes and running enthusiasts. The product's exclusivity raises questions about accessibility as it prepares for wider release during the autumn marathon season.
