Historic North-South Korean Soccer Showdown: Breaking an Eight-Year Gap
Naegohyang Women’s FC from North Korea is set to play against South Korea's Suwon FC Women on May 20, marking the first North Korean athletic visit to the South in eight years. The match is perceived as a step towards improving strained inter-Korean relations amid recent tensions.
Naegohyang Women's FC, a soccer club from North Korea, is set to face South Korea's Suwon FC Women on May 20, as confirmed by South Korea's Unification Ministry. This match marks the first visit by North Korean athletes to South Korea in nearly a decade.
South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung has been working to mend ties with North Korea, which have deteriorated in recent years. In 2018, North Korea's athletes participated in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, forming a unified ice hockey team for the first time with South Korea.
The upcoming match is part of the Asian Women's Champions League semi-final. The North Korean delegation will arrive on May 17, and if they lose, they'll return home the following day. Seoul will offer limited support, treating it as an international club event rather than an inter-Korean affair.
