Pakistan Penalized: Eight WTC Points Docked for Over-Rate Infraction
Pakistan has been docked eight points in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle after falling short by eight overs in their match against Bangladesh. The penalty results in Pakistan sitting eighth on the points table. Skipper Shan Masood accepted the charges and the team's fine of 40% match fees.
In a significant setback, Pakistan's cricket team has been penalized eight points in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle due to slow over-rate during their opening Test match against Bangladesh. The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed the penalty after the team fell eight overs short of the required rate as calculated with time allowances.
The penalty, administered by Jeff Crowe of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, results from a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct Article 2.22. Under this regulation, players incur a five percent fine of their match fee for every over not completed on time. Furthermore, WTC conditions mandate a loss of one championship point per unbowled over, leading to Pakistan's significant eight-point reduction in the standings.
Pakistan's captain Shan Masood admitted to the infraction and accepted the proposed sanctions, which avoided the need for a formal hearing. The enforcement was supported by the officiating team, including umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena. Despite the setback, Pakistan remains ahead of West Indies on the WTC points table but is now positioned eighth with a Points Percentage of 11.110.
