Xabi Alonso Takes the Helm at Chelsea
Chelsea have secured former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on a four-year contract. This change comes after Chelsea's recent FA Cup final loss and managerial shake-up following Liam Rosenior's dismissal. Alonso aims to elevate Chelsea's standing in the Premier League.
Chelsea Football Club has announced a four-year agreement with Xabi Alonso, former manager of Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, to lead the team as head coach. Sky Sports reported the development on Saturday, following Chelsea's narrow 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
The club, which has been on a quest for a new manager since Liam Rosenior's departure in April, has now entrusted Alonso with the task of reviving the team's fortunes. Alonso, a Spaniard, enjoyed initial success with Bayer Leverkusen by securing a league and cup double in his debut season as coach in 2023-24, despite an earlier dismissal from Real Madrid.
This appointment marks Alonso as the fifth manager under Chelsea's BlueCo ownership, following predecessors Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and Liam Rosenior. Chelsea is currently operating from ninth place in the Premier League and is in dire need of leadership to secure a spot in European competitions.
