Mizoram Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar has said that the state government is promoting sports at the grassroots level with a vision for the Olympics.
Inaugurating the P C Gabriel Lalliansanga Memorial MBA Junior Official Badminton Championship here on Tuesday, Hmar said the government is restructuring its sports ecosystem at the grassroots, specifically targeting eight core Olympic disciplines where Mizo athletes possess a distinct competitive edge nationwide, officials said on Wednesday.
The government is identifying and nurturing talent in eight Olympic disciplines -- Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Judo, Taekwondo, Weightlifting and Wrestling, Hmar said.
He encouraged young players to dream of representing India at the Olympic Games and cultivate an ''Olympic vision''.
The minister said Mizoram has made remarkable progress in badminton, especially in the junior and sub-junior categories, producing several champions and promising talents.
He stressed that with proper training and systematic development, the state could scale even greater heights in badminton and continue producing elite athletes.
He said sports act as an invaluable medicine for the physical and mental well being of the youth.
