After a notable tenure in which he led Girona to unexpected heights, Míchel Sánchez has parted ways with the club following its descent into a lower league. His departure comes on the heels of Girona's inability to secure a win against Elche, resulting in relegation from Spain's top-tier football.
Catalan club Girona acknowledged Sánchez's contributions, particularly his exemplary interaction with both team members and fans. Amid his departure, reports from Dutch media indicate that Sánchez may be in discussions with Ajax, potentially stepping in as the next head coach for the renowned European team.
Having joined Girona in 2021, Sánchez successfully promoted the team from the second division to La Liga. During the club's impressive 2023-24 season, Girona briefly led the standings but ultimately settled for a third-place finish behind giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
One of Girona's standout players during that remarkable season, Savinho, subsequently transferred to its parent club, Manchester City. Girona's performance in the Champions League, however, saw the team finish 33rd out of 36.
