Cristian Volpato Chooses Socceroos: A New Dawn for Australia at the World Cup
Cristian Volpato, a former Italy under-20 international, has opted to represent Australia at the World Cup. This decision comes after previously declining to play for the Socceroos. Football Australia has already initiated a change of association clearance with FIFA, allowing Volpato to join the Australian squad.
Cristian Volpato, a former Italy under-20 international, has chosen to represent Australia in the upcoming World Cup, according to Football Australia. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who plays for Sassuolo in Serie A, has dual citizenship, having been born and raised in Sydney.
Volpato had initially rejected an opportunity to play for Australia during the 2022 World Cup, as well as a recent approach from Australia coach Tony Popovic. However, his change of heart was confirmed with a release letter from Italian officials and paperwork lodged with FIFA to ratify his switch.
Once cleared, Volpato will be eligible to officially join the Socceroos, filling a gap left by playmaker Riley McGree, who was sidelined by injury. Popovic is set to announce the final 26-man squad for the tournament shortly, where Australia will face Turkey, the U.S., and Paraguay.
