Katie Boulter's quest for a third Nottingham title was thwarted as she fell 6-3 3-6 6-4 to American McCartney Kessler at the WTA 250 event.
Boulter, the eighth seed, had an edge early in the deciding set with a service break, but Kessler rallied to secure her place in the semi-finals.
Kessler, who only recently claimed her first main draw win on grass, will face either Slovak Rebecca Sramkova or Czech Linda Noskova next. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska and Poland's Magda Linette also reached the semi-finals.
