India Overtakes China as Leading Smartphone Manufacturer for US Market
In Q2 2025, India surpassed China as the leading manufacturing hub for US-imported smartphones, accounting for 44% of shipments. While China's share dropped to 25%, Apple's significant production shift to India drove this change. Factors include tariff negotiations and supply chain reorientation.

India has claimed the top spot as the largest manufacturing hub for smartphones shipped to the United States in the second quarter of 2025, according to Canalys. This shift comes in the wake of shrinking Chinese exports due to ongoing tariff negotiations.
Canalys, now a part of Omdia, highlighted that US smartphone shipments have seen a modest growth of 1% as manufacturers intensified their inventory strategies amidst tariff uncertainties. The report further emphasized the shift in supply chain dynamics, with China's share of US-bound smartphone assembly plummeting from 61% to 25% over the past year.
India's meteoric rise in smartphone manufacturing is exemplified by a 240% year-on-year growth, now comprising 44% of the US market share. Industry leaders like Apple, Samsung, and Motorola have progressively rerouted their production to India to mitigate risks associated with the US-China trade tensions.
