Alarming Rise in Cybercrime Against Children: A Closer Look
Cybercrime against children has surged significantly, rising from 232 cases in 2018 to 1,823 in 2022, as reported to the Lok Sabha. Special measures, such as cyber hygiene education, are being implemented, particularly in northeastern India, to combat this trend and enhance child-friendly cybercrime reporting mechanisms.

A staggering rise in cybercrime against children has been reported, with cases increasing from 232 in 2018 to a notable 1,823 in 2022, as informed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar shared data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), highlighting an alarming upsurge in cybercrimes targeting young individuals. The statistics reveal an increase not only in general cybercrime but also in specific crimes such as cyber blackmail, pornography, and bullying.
In response, the government is working on several initiatives to enhance cybersecurity awareness. I4C, in collaboration with ISEA, is creating a booklet on cyber hygiene aimed at women and children. Additionally, discussions are underway with NCERT to introduce cyber hygiene in school curricula, and various awareness campaigns are being deployed across northeastern states.
