In an ambitious move towards modernizing its power infrastructure, Goa is set to begin the installation of over 7.5 lakh pre-paid smart electricity meters starting December 2025, as revealed in a recent legislative assembly session. This initiative forms part of the Union Ministry of Power's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), launched in 2021.
According to Power Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar, the smart meters, which incorporate Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), are designed to boost operational efficiency and minimize energy theft. Additionally, they are equipped with features like Time-of-Day tariff management and compatibility with renewable energy sources, aiming to transform power usage patterns in Goa.
The minister disclosed that a total of 750,356 smart meters have been sanctioned for the state, with the implementation contract awarded to M/s DigiSmart Network Pvt Ltd, Jaipur. The project, delayed due to a lack of initial bidders, will proceed until March 31, 2028, and includes infrastructure upgrades like a new 220kV GIS substation at Saligao.
