Tech giant AMD is set to supply artificial intelligence chips to OpenAI, in a multi-year agreement that could significantly boost AMD's revenues to tens of billions of dollars annually. The deal, confirmed on Monday, enables the ChatGPT creator to potentially purchase up to a 10% stake in AMD.
This partnership marks a critical endorsement of AMD's AI chips and software and positions OpenAI to influence one of Nvidia's strongest competitors. Forrest Norrod, AMD's executive vice president, described the deal as transformative for the company and the broader tech industry.
With the plan to deploy AMD's next-generation MI450 chips starting from 2026, the deal promises over $100 billion in new revenue for AMD over four years. OpenAI is expected to utilize this deal to increase its AI infrastructure capabilities, maintaining its edge in the field.
