Seoul Unveils First Nuclear-Resistant Civilian Bunker Plan
Seoul is set to build its first civilian bunker by 2028 under a public housing complex, capable of withstanding nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks. This initiative is a response to the growing nuclear threat from North Korea, aiming to better protect residents and enhance citywide safety measures.

In a groundbreaking move to enhance public safety, Seoul has announced plans to construct its first civilian bunker designed to endure nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks. This new facility, scheduled for completion by 2028, will be located beneath a public housing complex, accommodating up to 1,020 persons for up to 14 days, highlighting the increasing necessity of such measures in the face of potential threats from North Korea.
The proposed bunker will span 2,147 square meters, offering protection for 999 households and marking an unprecedented initiative by local authorities. This comes in response to heightened concerns over North Korea's advancements in nuclear capabilities, evidenced by their recent military parade showcasing long-range ballistic missiles. Currently, Seoul houses over 3,200 bomb shelters, but few are equipped to defend against nuclear or chemical attacks.
President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the urgency of securing a halt in North Korea's nuclear developments, although diplomatic efforts have been rebuffed by Pyongyang. This initiative represents Seoul's proactive stance in protecting its citizens amid escalating regional tensions.
