Democratic Senator Ed Markey publicly raised concerns on Friday about the security of data collected by TikTok from its American users. He questioned the efforts of the platform's U.S. joint venture with Oracle in preventing foreign manipulation, particularly focusing on the integrity of TikTok's content recommendation algorithm.

TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, completed a significant agreement in January to create a mainly American-owned joint venture. This move was strategically designed to address security concerns and avoid a U.S. ban on the widely-used app, which boasts over 200 million American users.

Oracle, a behemoth in cloud computing, is one of the three managing investors of the TikTok USDS JV. The agreement entails retraining, testing, and updating TikTok's content recommendation algorithm with American user data securely housed in Oracle's U.S.-based cloud infrastructure.
