AUKUS Allies Innovate Unmanned Undersea Vehicles

The United States, Britain, and Australia have announced a collaborative effort to develop unmanned undersea vehicles as part of the AUKUS defence pact. This initiative, revealed by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, seeks to bolster maritime capabilities using advanced technologies including cyber technology and quantum computing.

The project, termed as 'Pillar Two' within AUKUS, aims to create highly adaptable undersea vehicle payloads for multi-mission operations. This strategic move is designed to maintain a competitive edge in the maritime domain against China's expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific region, which has been labeled dangerous by China.

British Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted that these undersea vehicles would dramatically enhance the defence responsiveness of the participating nations, particularly against threats to critical underwater infrastructure. This initiative, despite past inertia, marks a significant push towards cutting-edge defence collaboration.
