The Transport Ministry has taken a significant step to bolster the safety and technical standards of the burgeoning ropeways sector. It has formed an Empowered Committee for Ropeways Technical Evaluation, Certification and Safety (EC-Rope-TECS).
This initiative comes amid a rapid expansion of ropeways as a mode of transportation, calling for an institutional framework to manage standards and certifications. The committee will be helmed by the Director General (Road Development & Special Secretary), and it will comprise six additional members.
The Empowered Committee will focus on establishing and recognizing technical codes and standards, aligning national requirements, certification systems, and conducting audits to ensure the safety and reliability of ropeway systems. It will also monitor incidents that impact public safety during the construction, operation, or maintenance of these systems.
