The blue-collar job market is experiencing a transformative shift, as revealed in a recent report by WorkIndia. A remarkable 92% year-on-year increase in gig or freelance opportunities was recorded, highlighting a growing reliance on flexible, on-demand labor.
The boom is largely attributed to the rapid expansion of e-commerce, food delivery, and ride-hailing platforms. In particular, CEO Nilesh Dungarwal of WorkIndia observed that gig roles have evolved from being viewed as temporary fixes to becoming sustainable career choices for many individuals, especially in smaller cities.
The report analyzed data from 4.81 lakh job postings in 2023 and 2024, identifying Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata as key hubs for last-mile logistics jobs, each showing over 100% growth in delivery job postings. Overall, applications for gig roles soared by 63%, with graduates showing the greatest interest.
