Frederick Smith, the visionary behind FedEx Corp, has died, according to a memo from the current CEO Raj Subramaniam. Smith, who established FedEx in the 1970s with a modest fleet of planes, revolutionized the logistics industry.
Smith, born in 1944, recently served as executive chairman, focusing on governance and global issues like sustainability. He stepped down as CEO in 2022, with Subramaniam taking over the role. A revered figure, Smith was a mentor and source of inspiration to many within the company.
Beginning FedEx with 389 team members and 14 planes, Smith expanded the company significantly. Today, FedEx boasts a fleet of 705 aircraft and employs over 500,000 people worldwide, handling 17 million shipments daily.
