Passengers were left stranded overnight in train carriages and stations after a significant power cable failure disrupted high-speed rail lines between Madrid and Andalusia.

The failure halted around 20 trains and led to the cancellation of approximately 10 more, coinciding with the United Nations conference in Seville. Traffic was first suspended when the cable malfunction occurred near the towns of Yeles and La Sagra, 40 kilometres south of Madrid.

Efforts to resume service were postponed multiple times by ADIF. Emergency services were called to assist affected passengers enduring a severe heatwave. This disruption highlights vulnerabilities in Spain's expanded high-speed network, which also faced a copper cable theft incident in May.
