The US has unveiled a significant 50 per cent tariff on semi-finished copper imports, effective August 1, 2025. The White House stated in a July 30 executive order that current copper import levels jeopardize national security.

This tariff affects semi-finished copper and derivatives, drastically raising costs for consumption goods. India, a key exporter, is projected to see minimal impact due to the uniform application of tariffs across all countries, including allies like Japan and the EU.

GTRI's founder highlighted that this measure aims to lessen US reliance on foreign copper, vital to sectors such as defense, clean energy, and infrastructure. Despite India's major copper imports being valued at USD 14.45 billion, the broader economic shift could ripple through global copper markets.
