Sri Lanka has unveiled a new initiative aimed at accommodating international visitors by offering temporary driving licenses directly at the airport. The program allows tourists and non-dual citizen visitors to acquire licenses that are valid for one month.
According to Kamal Amarasinghe, the head of the Motor Traffic Department, the move is designed to expedite the licensing process, enabling tourists to enjoy the convenience of self-driving during their stay. However, the provision specifically excludes the operation of heavy vehicles and tuk-tuks.
Previously, tourists had to visit a suburban facility in Colombo to obtain a driving license after undergoing the necessary procedural steps. This new approach is set to streamline the experience for tourists, making it more accessible and faster.
