Claudio Descalzi, CEO of global technology-driven energy giant Eni, will headline the upcoming Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference as a keynote speaker, underscoring the company’s deepening engagement in Angola’s thriving hydrocarbon sector. The AOG event, set for September 3-4, 2025, in Luanda, marks a significant occasion as Angola commemorates 50 years of independence and seeks to strengthen its position as a major oil and gas producer in sub-Saharan Africa.
Eni’s Strategic Role through Azule Energy Joint Venture
Descalzi’s participation coincides with the continued growth of Azule Energy, the joint venture formed in 2022 between Eni and bp following the merger of their Angolan operations. Azule Energy has rapidly established itself as Angola’s largest independent equity oil and gas producer, managing 18 licenses with 11 under its operation and producing a combined output of approximately 210,000 barrels per day (bpd).
Alongside Descalzi, bp CEO Murray Auchincloss and Azule Energy CEO Adriano Mongini will also attend AOG 2025, signaling the venture’s firm commitment to Angola’s upstream oil and gas development. Descalzi will deliver a keynote address during the main conference, highlighting Eni’s vision and strategies for Angola’s energy future and regional collaboration.
Angola Oil & Gas Conference: A Premier Industry Platform
The Angola Oil & Gas conference, supported by key national institutions—including the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas; the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency; Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute; Sonangol, the national oil company; and the African Energy Chamber—is the largest industry gathering in Angola. The event serves as a vital platform for deal-making, strategic partnerships, and the advancement of Angola’s hydrocarbon sector.

Milestones in Offshore Oil and Gas Development
Leveraging Eni’s global expertise, Azule Energy has accelerated the development of Angola’s offshore resources with ambitious production targets. The company aims to increase oil production to 250,000 bpd in the near term. A key recent achievement was the July 2025 commissioning of the Agogo Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO), a centerpiece of the Agogo Integrated West Hub Development located in Block 15/06.
The Agogo FPSO, completed in just 29 months, represents Angola’s first offshore facility with fully offset operational emissions, underscoring a commitment to sustainable production. It joins the Ngoma FPSO in harnessing resources from the Agogo and Ndungu fields, collectively tapping into reserves estimated at 450 million barrels, with peak production anticipated at 175,000 bpd.
Azule Energy has also partnered with TotalEnergies on key projects, including the CLOV Phase 3 Development in Block 17, approximately 140 kilometers offshore. Azule Energy holds an 11.84% stake in CLOV Phase 3, which features a 30,000 bpd capacity supported by four wells tied back to the CLOV FPSO.
Advancing Angola’s Gas Sector
In addition to oil production, Azule Energy is spearheading Angola’s first non-associated gas project as the operator of the New Gas Consortium (NGC). This initiative targets shallow-water fields Quiluma & Maboqueiro (Q&M) and includes constructing onshore processing facilities linked to the Angola LNG plant in Soyo.
By February 2025, offshore platforms servicing the Q&M fields were completed, with the project scheduled to begin operations in early 2026. The development represents a landmark for Angola’s gas industry, supporting energy diversification and export potential.
Further strengthening Angola’s gas exploration, Azule Energy announced a significant discovery at the Gajajeira-01 well in Block 1/14 in July 2025. Located in the Lower Congo basin, the well revealed an estimated one trillion cubic feet of gas reserves alongside 100 million barrels of associated condensate. This discovery is the country’s first dedicated gas exploration well and is expected to catalyze a new wave of gas development and exploration activities.
Eni’s Broader Commitment to Angola’s Energy Future
Claudio Descalzi’s presence at AOG 2025 reflects Eni’s strategic commitment to Angola’s energy ambitions. As sub-Saharan Africa’s second-largest oil producer, Angola holds significant potential to expand its role within global energy markets, and partnerships like Azule Energy are central to realizing this vision.
By actively participating in AOG and advancing flagship projects, Eni aims to unlock new opportunities for collaboration, drive sustainable production growth, and contribute to Angola’s economic development and energy security.
The upcoming conference is expected to be a critical platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss innovations, investment opportunities, and the future trajectory of Angola’s oil and gas sector as it celebrates five decades of independence.
