Odisha's Bold Move: Night Shifts for Women
The Odisha government has allowed women to work night shifts in factories and commercial establishments, conditional on their written consent. The guideline mandates facilities for safety and convenience, raising employment opportunities but facing criticisms over safety concerns and employer responsibilities.

The Odisha government's recent decision to allow women to work night shifts marks a significant policy shift, aiming to enhance job opportunities for women. However, stipulations such as written consent and safety measures are mandatory, according to a government notification.
Issued by the Labour and Employees' State Insurance Department, the detailed guideline permits women to work during nighttime in various establishments, provided that safety measures are in place, including mandatory transport with GPS tracking and a minimum of three women present during shifts.
Despite support from Labour Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, the move faced criticism from BJD leaders who argue that the policy shifts the responsibility of safety onto the women themselves. The decision is a part of recent amendments to the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956.
