Rice Kids, founded by Anakh Sawhney, is proving that compassion knows no boundaries. What began as a small food drive in the United States has blossomed into a global effort, distributing over 71,000 hot meals, including 48,000 in India alone. Established in 2018, this youth-led nonprofit is dedicated to providing fresh, nutritious meals to underserved communities while enhancing education and promoting long-term self-reliance.

'Our work in India has shown me the power of proximity and purpose,' stated Anakh Sawhney, founder of Rice Kids. 'A single meal can pave the way for a school day, ultimately shaping a child's future. We aim to scale not just by feeding people, but by fostering their ability to thrive.' During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rice Kids shifted its focus to India, responding to the hunger crisis among migrant workers and low-income families. Initially launched as an emergency measure, its Indian operations have evolved into a deeper commitment, marked by rapid expansion with local partners and community volunteers. The initiative now provides daily nutrition and educational access to over 1,000 children, many of whom are pioneering formal education in their families.

In India, Rice Kids transcends meal distribution by integrating food assistance with education and vocational training, partnering with NGOs like the Sunaayy Foundation. By merging nourishment with opportunity, the nonprofit enables children to remain in school, envisioning a future that goes beyond mere survival. It was founded by Anakh Sawhney, who, moved by the poverty she saw in New York and India, started food drives at the age of nine. Since then, Rice Kids has raised over $100,000, formed 300+ partnerships, and expanded across five U.S. states and India, ensuring 100% of public donations are dedicated to food programs.

'As a first-generation Indian American, my connection to India is personal,' added Anakh. 'It's fulfilling to know that our efforts impact children in my parents' homeland. Each meal is a testament to the profound influence of empathetic gestures.' Looking ahead, Rice Kids plans to broaden its reach in India by penetrating more cities, expanding education-linked meal programs, and strengthening local alliances. The organization symbolizes a growing ecosystem of compassion, fueled by youth engagement and community action.
