A recent study from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow, highlights the detrimental effects of workplace bullying on creativity and innovation among employees. The research shows that negative behaviors, such as exclusion and unfair treatment, stifle creative thinking and reduce employees' engagement in innovative side projects.
The study utilized a mixed-method approach, gathering data from 112 participants in experimental scenarios and 313 employees from IT-enabled companies through surveys. Researchers found that bullying drains the 'relational energy' employees gain from recognition and support, emphasizing the critical need for open communication between managers and staff.
Recognized for its contribution at the 85th Academy of Management Conference in Copenhagen, the study urges companies to establish robust anti-bullying policies and performance metrics. By creating secure channels for employees to report mistreatment, organizations can foster environments that nurture innovation and creativity.
