The Central Government has launched a decisive campaign against e-commerce platforms employing 'dark patterns'—deceptive techniques designed to manipulate consumers into making unintended purchases. In a conversation with ANI, Nidhi Khare, the Consumer Affairs Secretary, underscored that such tactics will be considered unfair trade practices and will attract legal repercussions.

Khare expressed concerns over the potential misuse of AI for misinformation and propaganda. She pointed out how e-commerce companies employ dark patterns, such as concealing negative reviews. Emphasizing self-regulation, Khare urged these entities to conduct self-audits to curb the use of tactics like false urgency alerts and misleading pricing strategies.

The Department of Consumer Affairs issued guidelines identifying 13 specific dark patterns. Khare warned of strict actions, including potential raids on warehouses, against platforms flouting these rules. She also mentioned ongoing discussions to ensure reduced GST benefits are passed on to consumers seamlessly.
