The Finance Ministry announced on Thursday that it has instructed the Department of Revenue to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations made by Wintrack Inc of corruption and harassment by Chennai Customs officials. The Ministry emphasized the government's dedication to tackling the matter seriously and lawfully.
Wintrack Inc declared on Wednesday its intention to stop all import and export activities in India starting October 1, citing persistent harassment by Chennai Customs over the past 45 days. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs responded by highlighting the issue involved the misdeclaration by the importer, asserting actions will follow applicable laws.
In a detailed post, the Finance Ministry highlighted previous government initiatives aimed at transparency and ease of business, reiterating its stance on handling the issue with urgency. Wintrack's founder detailed corruption allegations and called for collective action against bribery, while the CBIC assured a thorough examination of the facts involved.
