India is strategically positioning itself as a global leader in next-generation telecom technologies, specifically focusing on 6G standards and patents. This initiative is spearheaded by the government alongside industry and academia partners, according to Lt General SP Kochar, Director General of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). Speaking exclusively to ANI during the Digicom Summit 2026, Kochar revealed that while telecom operators are not independently pushing these advancements, they are part of a collaborative and government-led effort.
Kochar emphasized the aim for India to hold approximately 10% of global patents in the 6G sphere, a significant leap in technological advancement. He stressed that the ongoing 5G rollout aims to extend connectivity to every subscriber across the nation, as telecom networks form the backbone of modern industry. Enhanced connectivity is expected to bolster sectoral efficiencies, underpinning nearly all industries nationwide.
On emerging technologies, he noted that the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly optimized network issue diagnosis and resolution processes, which were previously laborious. While challenges like permission issues from housing societies persist, the expansion of the network via the installation of additional towers remains a priority. Addressing satellite communication, Kochar called for uniform regulations to ensure fair play among similar service providers and highlighted the need to revise spectrum costs to enhance financial viability for telecom operators.
