India's Bold Move: Boosting Small Hydro Power in Remote Regions

India is embarking on an ambitious mission to advance its clean energy initiatives in remote and hilly areas through a targeted expansion of small hydro power projects. The Union Cabinet has greenlit a Small Hydro Power (SHP) Development Scheme, allocating Rs 2,584.60 crore to foster energy accessibility and stimulate regional economies.

The initiative, focused on the period from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31, seeks to generate reliable electricity for locations difficult to access while reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. Notably, the scheme prioritizes the North Eastern and hilly states, spotlighting an under-explored potential of 15,960 MW across identified sites.

Under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's jurisdiction, the scheme aims to streamline public-private partnerships and inject policy support to bolster development. Expected to attract Rs 15,000 crore in investments, the scheme will also advocate for the use of indigenous technology, resonating with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The government underscores the socio-economic upturn, anticipating job creation in rural zones and fostering local industries while ensuring the ecological sustainability of small hydro projects.
