India & New Zealand Forge a Landmark Free Trade Alliance
India and New Zealand signed a free trade agreement to enhance trade and investment. This accord provides duty-free access for all Indian exports and aims to strengthen sectors like textiles and leather. India will also benefit from reduced costs in manufacturing through duty-free imports of select raw materials.
On Monday, India and New Zealand marked a historic moment by signing a free trade agreement, aiming to bolster bilateral commerce and investments. The momentous occasion witnessed the presence of India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, and New Zealand's Trade and Investment Minister, Todd McClay. This pact grants duty-free access to 100% of India's exports to New Zealand, covering every tariff line, thereby enhancing competitiveness particularly in labor-heavy sectors like textiles, leather, and processed foods.
Previously, New Zealand imposed peak tariffs reaching up to 10% on key Indian exports, including automobiles and carpets. Now, with the FTA in place, Indian products gain full competitive stature in New Zealand, equaling the playing field when compared to other trade partners. Additionally, India secured duty-free inputs for its manufacturing sector, which include crucial materials like wooden logs and coking coal, further reducing production costs and boosting the global competitiveness of Indian industries.
While India has offered tariff liberalization on 70.03% of tariff lines, keeping 29.97% protected, primarily in sensitive segments like dairy and agriculture, New Zealand stands to benefit from a phased tariff elimination on select goods over the coming years. The Agreement ensures a robust economic partnership by outlining a USD 20 billion investment framework and includes a rebalancing clause to promote sustainable economic collaboration.
