The Chennai Division of Southern Railway announced on Tuesday that it recorded a total freight revenue of Rs 1,289.78 crore for the Financial Year 2025–26, marking a period of significant operational milestones and the diversification of its cargo base. According to an official release, the Division achieved a breakthrough by handling steel pipe movement for the first time. The shipment was transported from Chennai Harbour's Jawahar Dock to the Golden Rock Boiler Plant in Ponmalai, the release added. In a strategic shift toward green logistics, the Division commenced the transportation of electric automobiles. Montra Electric units were moved from Tada to Rangapani, while Mahindra Electric vehicles were transported from Jolarpettai to stations under the Northeast Frontier Railway. The Division further expanded its logistics portfolio by introducing container traffic for the Central Warehousing Corporation, moving goods from the Korukkupet Goods Shed to Noli in the Delhi Division, according to the press release. Significant efforts were also made to recapture key traffic streams, stated the press release. This included the operation of Truck-on-Train (ToT) services involving 430 trucks. Additionally, limestone traffic was reintroduced after a 14-month gap, originating from the Kamarajar Port Limited siding for destinations such as Toranagallu and Mecheri Road. Strengthening its freight infrastructure, the Division commissioned its second Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) at Anuppampattu. Developed by Sical Multimodal Rail Transport Limited, the terminal managed an inaugural rake of 45 wagons destined for the Chakradharpur Division, covering a distance of 1,389 km, according to the press statement. Officials stated that these milestones reflect the Division's focus on enhancing freight efficiency and providing sustainable transportation solutions to support industrial growth.
