AIMTC Demands Halt to 'Danda Tax' in West Bengal

The AIMTC urges West Bengal's Chief Minister to cease the illegal collection of a 'special fee' from nationally permitted vehicles. This fee, dubbed the 'Danda Tax', contradicts the central government's 'One Nation, One Tax' policy and imposes a financial strain on transporters, tarnishing the state's image.

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to halt the collection of a 'special fee' from vehicles with national permits traversing the state. The AIMTC asserts that this fee is being levied unlawfully.

C L Mukati, AIMTC's National Chairman of the RTO and Traffic Committee, penned a letter to the Chief Minister, highlighting that the levy contradicts the Center's 'One Nation, One Tax' principle. According to Mukati, these unwarranted collections, known as the 'Danda Tax', are damaging to West Bengal's reputation and financially burdensome for transport businesses.

The letter included a receipt for Rs 7,040 from the West Bengal Transport Department, showing a 'special fee' of Rs 7,000. Mukati noted the lack of legal grounds for this charge and emphasized that no other Indian state imposes such a 'special fee' on nationally permitted vehicles.
