Fatal Bus Collision on Virginia Highway Claims Five Lives, Injures Many

A tragic accident unfolded early Friday morning on Virginia's Interstate 95 when a bus collided with several vehicles near Quantico. The crash resulted in the loss of five lives and left dozens injured, according to police reports. Victims were swiftly transported to various hospitals, with several in critical condition.

Authorities have identified that traffic was slowing due to a work zone when the bus failed to adjust its speed and struck six vehicles. Peyton Vogel from the Federal Transit Administration called the incident devastating, marking it as one of the most tragic events witnessed. Four of the fatalities were from a single vehicle, further heightening the tragedy's impact.

The bus, operated by E and P Travel Inc, was carrying approximately 34 passengers at the time of the collision. Surviving passengers described harrowing experiences of uncontrolled impact, chaos, and fear for their lives until the bus came to a halt. An investigation team from the National Transportation Safety Board is conducting a thorough review of the accident to determine causative factors.

The backlog of traffic caused by the crash lasted several miles even after the highway was reopened by noon. Federal authorities continue to address broader safety concerns regarding interstate passenger bus travel, informed by previous incidents and studies.
