In a landmark achievement for gender parity in education, the pass percentage of girls from the science stream surpassed those in the arts for the first time in 2024, as revealed by a Ministry of Education report. This significant shift is based on an analysis of data from 66 school education boards across India.
Historically dominated by arts, the education landscape is seeing a paradigm shift, driven by improved facilities in schools, including dedicated labs and smart classes. The top 33 education boards accounted for 97% of the student population, illustrating a comprehensive range of data.
Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar highlighted that the number of girls graduating in science saw a steep rise, from 13.4 lakh in 2013 to 28.1 lakh in 2024. Meanwhile, the report indicates a decline in students opting for commerce streams, highlighting a growing preference for science and arts among students.
