Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom Amidst Political Turmoil

Juneteenth celebrations have unfolded across the US, commemorating the pivotal day in 1865 when Union soldiers informed enslaved Black people in Texas of their freedom. This year, attendees noted a heightened significance due to ongoing political and social challenges.

While the holiday has long been celebrated by Black Americans, its designation as a federal holiday in 2021 under President Joe Biden has expanded its observance. As Juneteenth gains wider recognition, former President Donald Trump's policies against diversity initiatives and historical inclusivity raise concerns.

In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Robert Reid, among others, participated in events opposing what he described as Trump's divisive strategies. Attendees emphasized Juneteenth's importance in recognizing both Black and American history as a collective narrative. Advocates hope that these gatherings will foster unity and historical understanding.
