The bypoll for Kerala's Nilambur Assembly constituency commenced with a 13.15% turnout in the first two hours, despite morning rains dampening spirits.

Polling began promptly at 7 am under heavy security, including central security forces and police presence, with live webcasting ensuring transparency throughout the process.

Residents flocked to 263 polling stations, eager to choose among 10 candidates vying for the seat. Ruling party member M Swaraj, Congress's Aryadan Shoukath, independent Trinamool Congress convener P V Anvar, and BJP's Mohan George stand as main contenders.

Shoukath assured media that voter turnout would improve, stating the rain wouldn't pose a significant challenge. Additionally, the introduction of 59 new booths aimed to minimize queuing issues. Confident of a sweeping victory, he expressed hope for a substantial turnout.

The LDF's Swaraj echoed this sentiment, expressing optimism in overcoming weather-related challenges and anticipated a surge in voter activity as the day progressed.

Anvar, instrumental in prompting the byelection after resigning due to rifts with the CPI(M)-led LDF, highlighted developmental achievements during his tenure but criticized major parties for neglecting local issues in their campaigns.

Anvar, currently aligned with the Trinamool Congress, mentioned ongoing support, anticipating a healthy vote share despite previous LDF and UDF affiliations.

Before polls opened officially, officials ensured the readiness of Electronic Voting Machines. Of the 2.32 lakh electorate, 1,13,613 men, 1,18,760 women, and 8 transgender people registered, including 7,787 first-time voters, alongside 373 overseas and 324 service voters.

Polling paraphernalia was efficiently distributed at Chungathara Mar Thoma Higher Secondary School on Wednesday.
