In a significant move to overhaul its examination system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct Class-10 board exams twice in an academic year starting 2026. The first phase in February will be compulsory, while a second optional phase in May allows students to improve their performance. In cases where students take both phases, the CBSE will retain their higher score, officials announced Wednesday.
Approved norms under the new National Education Policy (NEP) aim to ease exam pressure on students while maintaining rigorous standards. CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj emphasized the benefit for students willing to enhance their scores in science, mathematics, social science, and languages.
CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh noted that the mandatory February phase ensures that students take exams seriously, maintaining sanctity. Students missing three or more subjects in the first phase will be marked with 'Essential Repeat' status, eligible only for the next main exam. Students from winter-bound and sports-involved backgrounds will have tailored options, Bhardwaj added. There will be no separate supplementary exams; the second phase will serve that purpose.
