Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday transferred Rs 25,000 each into the bank accounts of 94,234 students who scored 75 per cent or above in their Class XII board exams to buy laptops.
Yadav also announced that advanced laptops of the same value will be given from next year instead of incentive money.
He transferred a total of Rs 235 crore as part of his government's Meritorious Student Promotion Scheme at an event held in Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre. Fifteen students were given laptops on stage by the CM at the event.
''Education is the pivot of overall development of human beings and 'education for all' is the development mantra of the state government. Our government has made every effort to bring the light of education to every child of the state. Not only studies, but the foundation of their bright future is also being laid by connecting talented students with new technology and new education methods,'' Yadav said on the occasion.
The beneficiaries comprised 60 per cent girls and 40 per cent boys, he noted, adding ''our daughters are overcoming challenges and excelling in every field''.
More than 4.32 lakh meritorious students have so far benefited from this scheme started 15 years ago, with the state spending Rs 1080 crore under the scheme during this period, he said.
''The government has also provided notebooks, uniforms, bicycles and scooty to students and now we are also providing laptops. This step will prove to be very helpful in connecting students with digital and modern education,'' he said.
