Delhi's New Bill Aims to Curb Private School Fee Hikes

In a significant move, Delhi's Education Minister Ashish Sood introduced a bill on Monday aimed at regulating fee hikes in private schools. Dubbed the 'Delhi School Education Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees Bill, 2025,' the legislation seeks to establish comprehensive checks against arbitrary fee increases.

The bill has stirred controversy, with Sood alleging attempts to thwart its progress. He criticized the former AAP government for alleged dealings with private schools that inflated fees unchecked. The new bill, he claims, addresses these issues through stringent regulation and penalties against violations.

The proposed law mandates the formation of oversight committees at different levels and introduces penalties for first-time and repeated violations. Additionally, it prohibits schools from penalizing students for non-payment of fees. Some political leaders, however, argue the bill should undergo further scrutiny by a 'Select Committee.'
