Expelled Dreams: Afghan Scholars and Workers Forced Back Home

Amid recent geopolitical tensions, Iran has intensified deportations of Afghan nationals, citing security and undocumented immigration concerns. Habiba, who fled Afghanistan to study in Iran, was among those expelled, now returning to a reality where pursuing education is nearly impossible under Taliban restrictions.

The deportations surged after a short-lived conflict between Israel and Iran, further aggravating already strained relations between Afghanistan and Iran. Afghan returnees are now grappling with an uncertain future in a homeland suffering from economic collapse and social restrictions. Many, including Habiba, left Iran abruptly, losing educational and financial opportunities.

Iranian authorities argue the deportations were of illegal immigrants and done respectfully; however, reports from aid workers and returnees paint a contrasting picture. Families have been split, aspirations shattered, and returnees left vulnerable and displaced. The crisis underscores the long-term humanitarian challenges facing Afghan migrants.
