The Union Cabinet has given the green light to the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) scheme, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last Friday. This ambitious program will span over 275 technical institutions, including 175 engineering colleges and 100 polytechnics.

Scheduled from 2025 to 2030, the MERITE scheme requires a financial outlay of Rs 4,200 crore, half of which will be facilitated through a World Bank loan. The initiative seeks to revolutionize technical education, benefitting approximately 7.5 lakh students across the nation.

Targeted institutions range from elite National Institutes of Technology to local polytechnics, with state and UT departments related to technical education also receiving support. This move is anticipated to elevate the standards and reach of technical education in India.
