The Lok Sabha has moved forward with the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, following the passage of the relevant bill on Tuesday. The Union government has pledged capital support of Rs 550 crore, marking a significant step in advancing education in Assam.

The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introduced in the midst of ongoing opposition protests concerning electoral roll revisions in Bihar, was successfully passed. This new institution will be the second IIM in the Northeast after Shillong.

Beyond enhancing educational prospects, the establishment of the IIM in Guwahati is part of a broader Special Development Package that includes all-round regional growth. The initial governance of the IIM will be managed by appointed representatives until a formal Board is constituted.
