Spain has intensified its wildfire response, adding 500 soldiers to the effort, as the nation grapples with severe blazes fueled by extreme temperatures. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made the announcement as Spanish authorities await aircraft reinforcements from other European countries to manage the escalating situation.
Significant fires continue to threaten regions like Galicia, where 12 major wildfires rage near Ourense. With temperatures potentially soaring to 45°C (113°F), evacuation and lockdown measures are expanding to shield residents from danger, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing crisis on daily life.
As wildfires also ravage parts of Portugal and Turkey, the European firefighting force, already activated as frequently as last year's summer season, is strained. Climate experts warn that worsening heat and dryness, linked to climate change, are increasingly jeopardizing Europe's landscapes and communities.
