Trump Pressures Smithsonian Amid Federal Funding Threats
U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at pressuring the Smithsonian Institution by potentially cutting its federal funding. The Smithsonian, a key cultural institution, is under review for allegedly spreading 'anti-American ideology.' Trump previously targeted educational institutions with similar actions.

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested he will pressure the Smithsonian Institution, a leading museum and research complex in U.S. history and culture, by implementing tactics similar to those used with colleges and universities, threatening federal funding cuts. On Truth Social, Trump stated, 'I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made.'
The Smithsonian, established in 1846 and encompassing 21 museums, galleries, and the National Zoo, has not responded to requests for comment. Most of its facilities are located in Washington, D.C. Asked whether Trump might threaten Smithsonian funding cuts, a White House official noted, 'President Trump will explore all options and avenues to get the Woke out of the Smithsonian and hold them accountable.'
The administration announced an internal review of Smithsonian museums after Trump's accusations of spreading 'anti-American ideology' caused concern among civil rights advocates. Trump criticized the Smithsonian for focusing on negative aspects of U.S. history without highlighting success and future prospects. While the Smithsonian receives the majority of its budget from Congress, it remains independent in decision-making.
