A case has been registered against five students from a prestigious law college in Pune following allegations of ragging, officials confirmed on Sunday. A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at the Deccan police station on April 25, citing breaches under the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act. This development comes over a year since the initial complaint was submitted to college authorities. The institution had conducted an inquiry, but the complainant found it insufficient and sought intervention from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The complainant, a former first-year LLB student, reported sustained harassment, including verbal abuse, isolation, and intimidation. Allegations include being confined to his room, subjected to loud music disturbances, and restricted movement in the hostel. These incidents reportedly began following his disapproval of smoking within the premises, escalating into psychological distress and social isolation.
College authorities stated that the case, rooted in disagreements among hostel residents, was handled per UGC's anti-ragging guidelines. They reported conducting a thorough investigation but found no substantial evidence of ragging. Police confirmed an ongoing investigation and assured legal procedures would be followed promptly, potentially leading to further action once findings are evaluated.
