Delhi University's St Stephen's College reached a historic milestone by appointing Professor Susan Elias as its first female principal, an official announcement confirmed on Tuesday. This marks a significant moment as she will take charge in June 2026, ending an unbroken line of male leadership since the college's founding in 1881.

Professor Elias, who was previously the pro vice chancellor at Chandigarh University in Lucknow, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Her academic leadership includes roles such as director of research at Hindustan University and various positions at Vellore Institute of Technology.

The college, with its deep historical roots since 1881, is celebrating this landmark appointment. The principal's post had been vacant since March 2026, following the end of the previous principal's term amid administrative challenges, which Elias is expected to navigate in her new position.
